Fluorite is a transparent or translucent stone with a vitreous luster, of various colors: colorless, blue, pink, yellow, green, purple (almost black). Often there is unevenness and different intensity of color, there are banded and spotted varieties. Perhaps there is no mineral in the world that would have such a wide range of colors that fluorite has. The use of the fluorspar product itself as a flux in ferrous metallurgy. Metallurgical grades of the fluorite product must contain more than 65% CaF2, but their technical conditions of use determine the mandatory large dimension of the fluorite pieces (the proportion of pieces less than 50 mm is less than 10%). Achieving the required purity of raw materials with a sufficiently significant lumpiness of the fluorite material is a rather difficult task, and metallurgical grades of fluorspar are a rather scarce raw material. Most of the fluorspar concentrate offered for sale is small-sized. To increase the size of the pieces, pelletizing and briquetting of fluorspar concentrates are used, but this leads to an increase in the cost of a commercial product. It is also used as a component of additives for welding electrodes that increase the strength and quality of welds. For the production of high-quality welding consumables for fluorspar raw materials, small-sized gravity and flotation fluorite concentrates are used, but very strict requirements are imposed on the content of harmful impurities: S - less than 0.1%, P - less than 0.1%. Natural varieties of fluorite ores with a low sulfur content are quite rare and it is sometimes simply impossible to obtain a high-quality electrode concentrate. |
